Kentucky Mom Surprises Husband by Giving Birth on the Way to the Hospital, Describes His Reaction as ‘Like Seeing a Ghost’

A woman unexpectedly gave birth to her second child in her husband’s car en route to the hospital, managing the ordeal with remarkable composure.

Brooke Canady, 30, who was 37 weeks pregnant with her second son, woke up on May 8, 2024, feeling strong contractions. She promptly informed her workplace of her absence as the contractions intensified. After rousing her husband Jeffrey, who had been caring for their 2-year-old son, Tripp, she dialed her doula when the contractions became more frequent.

By 7 a.m., Brooke’s contractions were less than five minutes apart, prompting her doula to advise heading to the hospital. Maneuvering into the car, Brooke had to sit in the front due to occupied rear seats with car seats. As they sped towards the hospital, her contractions became more intense, leaving her able to only manage a terse “Flashers” to her startled husband.

Despite the 45-minute drive ahead, Brooke realized they wouldn’t reach the hospital in time. Fifteen minutes into the journey, her body began pushing involuntarily. Ten minutes from the hospital, her water broke, and she calmly informed Jeffrey, “I’m going to have this baby.” Astonished, Jeffrey was focused on the road and only realized the birth was imminent when they parked.

At a stoplight near the hospital, Brooke delivered her son herself, with emergency hospital staff rushing to their aid shortly after. Their OB-GYN happened to be among them, facilitating a safe delivery. Their son, Truett Canady, arrived at 8:38 a.m., weighing 7 lbs. 9 oz., healthy and calm.

Reflecting on the event, Brooke described it as a redemptive and surreal experience, contrasting it with her older son’s NICU stay after a complicated birth. She expressed gratitude for her body’s resilience and saw it as a testament to faith and maternal strength.

Both mother and baby are now safe and settled at home.
