Safina Namukwaya, a 74-year-old woman from Uganda, recently gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl—via cesarean section at the Women’s Hospital International Facility Center in Kampala. This follows her fertility treatment, including in vitro fertilization (IVF), at the facility.
Namukwaya’s delivery marks a significant event as she becomes one of the oldest women to give birth. According to Arthur Matsiko, the hospital’s spokesman, she is in good health and has been walking around the hospital as directed. Notably, she had previously given birth to a daughter at the same facility in 2020 following IVF treatment.
The Women’s Hospital International Facility Center, run by a well-known East African gynecologist, specializes in aiding couples with fertility challenges. This case follows other notable instances of advanced age pregnancies facilitated by IVF, such as a 73-year-old woman in southern India who gave birth to twins in 2019.
